The IFC’s
The IFC’s were formed in 1961 when Larry Nixon, Wayne Lanier and Jerry Long met while playing in a big band at N.C. State University. Bill Thorn and Gray Steifel, fraternity brothers of Larry at Sigma Phi Epsilon, wanted to form a band and needed a bass player. Richard Stroud (Phi Kappa Tau brother) a gifted guitar and bass player was found. Jerry Long (Delta Sigma Phi) accepted as our drummer. With all the fraternity connections, the group took the name IFC’s which represented Inter Fraternity Combo. Wayne Lanier, our sax man, was a pledge at Sigma Phi Epsilon. Richard graduated and was replaced by Buck Snelson (Sigma Chi) on guitar. The group was a contemporary of the Embers, the Tams, the Catalinas, the Tassels and other bands who were origins of Beach Music in North and South Carolina. Graduation and marriage dissolved the group in May 1963. Wayne and Larry joined the Tassels and Wayne later played with the Pieces of Eight.
